The research activity of the Department of Pharmacy is primarily aimed at the preservation of the state of health and well-being of the individuals through a multidisciplinary approach based on chemical, technological, biological and pharmacological sciences. The research areas range from the design and development of new drugs, innovative therapeutic approaches and functional products to the chemical risk assessment. In parallel to basic research, generally performed in cooperation with both national and international institutions, the Department participates in applied research studies together with companies operating in the domains of drugs, food, cosmetics, health and environment.

In light of the quality of its research activity, the Department of Pharmacy was awarded as Department of Excellence 2018-2022 by MUR, allowing the set-up of five brand new specialized laboratories (structural analysis, molecular biology, cell culture, molecular modelling and drug delivery), to further increase the scientific power of the institution.

Furthermore, the Department is currently among the top-ranked organisations to be recognized as Department of Excellence 2023-2027.

Presently, the scientific team is made of 206 people working in 21 specific areas. Notably, many of them are listed in the top 2% scientists world ranking.
