Health and wellness

The exponential growth in healthcare spending and the regulatory changes in recent years in the health sector have led the Department of Pharmacy to establish a knowledge valorisation activity in the field of public health protection, with a particular focus on medicines.

Since then, the CIRFF has been committed to improving decision-making within healthcare governance, based on the belief that every decision should benefit from the most up-to-date and effective scientific evidence for the context in which it is applied.

Overall, this work led to formal recognition by the Campania Region of the CIRFF within the Department of Pharmacy as an operational tool for analysing the information assets contained in the Regional Information System (SISR) related to the pharmaceutical area (Regional Resolution No. 276/2017). It was also recognised by the European Network of Centres for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance (ENCePP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for drug utilisation and pharmacoeconomic studies.

Since 2021, Professor Valentina Orlando of the Department of Pharmacy has served as the Scientific Director of the HealthCare Data Lab, a research programme focused on applying big data in healthcare to support the Campania Region's Directorate General for Health Protection (Decree No. 302/2021).

The HealthCaRe Data Lab is the first example in Italy where a University and policymakers work together in a coordinated way to ensure that scientific research effectively supports healthcare governance.

Specifically, in its first three years, the Lab has carried out the following activities:

  • Translate available scientific evidence on drug utilisation and pharmacoeconomics into healthcare policy actions;
  • Regularly assess the outcomes of healthcare policies in real-world clinical practice, so that any prescribing inappropriateness can be addressed promptly, ensuring better resource allocation, more efficient care pathways, the promotion of higher standards of care, and safer, more efficient, and more effective use of medicines;
  • Strengthen the knowledge and awareness of policymakers and healthcare professionals;
  • Increase patient empowerment, with a focus on adherence to pharmacological therapies;
  • Generate new evidence through scientific publications.

Health and Wellbeing Education" in collaboration with La Tenda Onlus

In the heart of the Rione Sanità district in Naples, the La Tenda Onlus Center — for over 40 years committed to educational and social support — hosted a unique initiative: the project "Health and Wellbeing Education." Developed in collaboration with the research group The Blue Chemistry Lab, coordinated by Professor Valeria Costantino of the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Naples Federico II, the initiative involved children aged 9 to 11 in a series of three scientific laboratory workshops.

The young participants, referred to as "Travelers," were introduced to the world of chemistry through hands-on, engaging activities. These included the extraction of food dyes from colored candies using water as a solvent, the observation of colour changes in natural pigments extracted from red cabbage in response to pH variations, and the analysis of samples through thin-layer chromatography (TLC), allowing them to learn fundamental techniques for substance separation and identification.

Conducted through a playful and interactive approach, the workshops offered the children an alternative educational experience, stimulating curiosity and fostering early engagement with chemistry and scientific research. The initiative pursued a dual objective: promoting wellbeing and social inclusion in a complex urban context, while demonstrating how science can serve as a powerful tool for personal development, growth, and social integration.

Neapolitan Days of Health, Prevention and Wellbeing "Health for all" 2022 & 2023

The Department of Pharmacy contributed to the Neapolitan Days of Health, Prevention and Wellbeing "Health for all" which were held from 1 to 2 October 2022 and 23-24 September 2023 in Piazza del Plebiscito https://www.comune.napoli.it/salute-per-tutti.

The Neapolitan Health Days saw an extraordinary participation of the public. More than 15,000 attendees on Saturday and Sunday visited the "Health for all" village, where over 50,000 services were provided in a series of different specialist disciplines, scientific information, consultancy and prevention activities, as well as veterinary services.

We presented a series of laboratory activities that represent some of the main lines of research carried out at the Department. In parallel, we organized a calendar of seminars in a nutshell in order to provide citizens with an information service on the main issues relating to the world of drugs and pharmacy.
